Overview

The 77 islands of the North and South Thiladhunmathi were split into Haa Alifu and Haa Dhaalu Atolls in 1958.

Utheemu: The birthplace of Mohamed Thakurufaanu, who with, his brothers and his companions fought an eight-year long war to drive out the Portuguese invaders who occupied the Maldives from 1558 to 1573.

Utheemu Ganduvaru: the wooden palace in which the nation’s revered hero Mohamed Thakurufaanu lived and grew up evokes more than any other existing building, the lifestyle of the rich, centuries ago.

The island of Baarah:  The legendary vessel ‘Kalhuohfummi’ that played a key role in Mohamed Thakurufaanu’s war against the Portuguese was built on this island.

Kelaa: The British established a staging post in 1934 and until the end of World War II it functioned as the northerly counterpart to Gan in the south. A mosque built during the reign of Sultan Mohamed Ibn Ali (AD 1692-1701) still stands today as a historical place of interest on the island.

The island of Uligamu provides a convenient port of call for yachters navigating the northern Indian Ocean. Today it is famous among yachters who travel to the Maldives and those who stop by on their way to other shores.
